Spanish Cedar Rough Lumber — Aromatic Cedrela odorata, Priced per Board Foot

Estate Millwork stocks genuine Spanish Cedar for our exterior doors, windows, and aromatic millwork. Buy that same kiln-dried Spanish Cedar by the board foot — choose thickness and milling, enter the quantity you need, and add to cart.

Choose Rough Sawn for shop stock you’ll mill yourself. Choose S4S for boards surfaced to 150-grit and ready to use. Choose S2S for face-surfaced material you’ll joint yourself.

About Our Spanish Cedar

  • Genuine Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata) — a member of the mahogany family, not a true cedar
  • Warm pinkish- to reddish-brown, with the unmistakable aromatic scent that repels insects
  • Naturally rot- and decay-resistant — long the standard for exterior joinery in humid climates
  • Light, straight-grained, and dimensionally stable; works easily by hand or machine
  • Janka hardness around 600 — soft enough to carve and bore, firm enough to hold detail
  • Kiln-dried to 6–8% moisture content; available 4/4 through 10/4

Thickness and Milling

We carry Spanish Cedar in 4/4 (1 in.), 6/4 (1½ in.), 8/4 (2 in.), and 10/4 (2½ in.) off the shelf, and can cut 12/4 and thicker blanks on request. 8/4 is the workhorse thickness for instrument bodies, guitar necks, and door parts.

  • Rough Sawn — oversized and band-sawn, for shops that joint and plane their own stock. The most wood for the money.
  • S2S — both faces planed flat and parallel; you joint one edge and rip to width.
  • S4S — surfaced four sides and sanded to 150-grit, square and ready to build or finish straight from the box.

Grade

Our standard Spanish Cedar is #1 Common and better — the same boards we pull for our own exterior doors and windows, with long clear cuttings and straight grain. FAS and Select stock is available on request when a job needs full-length clear faces. Occasional gum pockets are natural to the species; ask about clear cuttings if your parts must be pocket-free.

What Builders Make from Our Spanish Cedar

Spanish Cedar is prized where aroma, stability, and rot resistance matter more than hardness. Our customers use it for:

  • Humidors and cigar boxes — the traditional lining wood; its scent and moisture stability are why cigars are stored in it.
  • Musical instruments — classical guitar necks and tops, and Native-American-style and Andean flutes; 8/4 rough Spanish Cedar is a staple tonewood for wind-instrument and flute makers.
  • Exterior doors, windows, and sash — our own most common use; it holds paint and finish and shrugs off weather.
  • Boatbuilding and marine trim — light, stable, and naturally rot-resistant planking and joinery.
  • Millwork, veneer, and carving — mouldings, closet linings, and detail work that benefits from the aroma.

How Board-Foot Pricing Works

Spanish Cedar is priced per board foot — one board foot is 144 cubic inches (a piece 12 in. wide, 12 in. long, 1 in. thick). Enter the board feet you need above and the price updates by thickness and milling. Because we mill our own stock in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, the price you see is factory direct with no distributor markup. Buying in volume?
